African Americans Exposed To More Pro-Tobacco Advertising

A recent study by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine indicates that African-Americans are exposed to more pro-tobacco advertising than Caucasians. “Our results also showed that there are about 2.6 times as many advertisements per person in African-American areas as compared to Caucasian areas.”

Traditional advertising such as out-of-home billboards and magazines were used for the study.

“Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease… (and) African-Americans currently bear the greatest burden…these findings will help us develop interventions and further research aimed at reducing tobacco-related health disparities.” Source
