African Americans Underrepresented In Detroit's Construction Workforce

"Missing in Action," a study of the construction industry’s hiring practices in 19 cities, indicates that Detroit’s workforce is primarily white, and only 7 out of 100 workers are black.

“Detroit had the second-worst disparity rate…construction employment works through informal networks…what's happened with African Americans is they simply aren't plugged into networks...It's one of the reasons why we have a high crime rate. People do what they can to survive." Source
