Nielsen Releases HDTV Households By Ethnicity

Nielsen recently released the number of high definition-television households (HDTV) by ethnicity.

"Overall, Nielsen found that only 13.7% of TV households in the United States -- or roughly 15.5 million out of 112.8 million total U.S. TV households -- are equipped with HD televisions and HD tuners capable of receiving HDTV signals, a status Nielsen described as “HD Capable.”

It also estimates that 10.4% of Hispanic households are HD Capable and 8.2% are HD Receivable, while 8.1% of African-American households are HD Capable and 6.9% are HD Receivable.

Ok..what is this about, What difference does it make what ethnicity you are in reference to the HDTV market. Truth be told , I have owned and continue to own HDTV's both Plasma and LCD and by 2009 most broadcast channels will be converting to HD Digital signal feeds. So no matter what ethnicity you, you will have to upgrade your tv sets. This seems to me more of a way to shift the marketing demographic for certain brand names of HD TV's and how they will influence sales in certian markets.

Good point.

Yes, market intelligence companies such as Nielsen delve into the buying habits of ethnic groups so it can offer advertisers and others data about consumer trends.

If a company is aware that African Americans have a preference for a certain product or service, it may result in the company spending more of its advertising dollars trying to reach us.
